This is a ‘sleeve’ design. The engagement ring fits in the center of the sleeve and rests on two pads at the bottom. The main advantage to this design is that the engagement ring can be worn on its own by simply pulling it out of the sleeve. No need to solder everything together and the rings do not slide against each other, causing wear.
