There are going to be a lot of people who don’t agree with me about these cuts and their popularity. But here goes anyways! Here are the five least popular diamond shapes.
Pear Shapes and the Bradshaw Effect
The pear shape or tear drop is not really a ‘bad’ choice but go back many years ago when Carrie Bradshaw received a pear shape engagement ring from Aidan on Sex and the City and her and Samatha’s remarks, virtually ended the pear shape’s popularity. This shape can be very brilliant, but it does take some extra effort to find one that is very well cut and doesn’t give up light return. Perhaps wearing a diamond that is referred to as a ‘teardrop’ for an engagement ring has dulled the appeal. It simply hasn’t been very popular for a long time. Yes, there are celebrities’ that wear a pear-shaped diamond, but keep in mind these celebrities may have several other diamond shapes.

Heart Shape for a Pendant Maybe?
Number two is the heart shape. This shape looks smaller than other shapes of the same weight and definitely loses brilliance due to the way it has to be faceted to create the shape. There may be some romantics out there who love the shape, but they are a rarity. Save this shape for a pendant.

Triangular-shaped Engagement Rings

Three on the list is the trillium, trilliant or triangle. Basically, this shape loses a huge amount of brilliance due to the shallow nature of the cut. There are some exceptional triangular shapes that have very good light performance, but they are rare. Most people that have this shape complain at how easily the shape gets dull and loses its sparkle. A poor cut grade will do that because the shallow diamond does not have great light return and that is what makes a diamond sparkle. Save this cut for accent side diamonds. Choose a different shape for the centre of your engagement ring in Calgary.
Princess Cut Engagement Ring
The princess cut makes up number four. This shape was super popular for a long time. I never understood why! It is generally a deep cut and looks smaller than other shapes of the same weight. It rarely has even close to the brilliance of other cuts of diamond because of the deeper cut. The other problem I have seen over years, is that if a diamond is going to chip or break, it is this cut and the corners. They are just too susceptible to a knock that can chip the corners.

Modified Round Brilliant Cut
Last on the list is the “modified round brilliant cut.” This covers a host of round shaped diamonds. These diamonds have taken the pattern and faceting of the modern round brilliant cut diamond and changed it up a bit or even a lot. Basically, this group has added a bunch of facets or even removed facets. This is done to create a sort of cache or distinctness of the diamond. In fact, it reduces the brilliance and often is nothing more than some cruise ship stop over stores attempt to tell you that a diamond that is usually 10 to 20% visually smaller than it should be for the weight of the diamond, is better. And then they can charge more due to the distinctness. When in fact they sell on the dealer’s market for less than a round brilliant cut. Truly nothing more than a gimmick and not backed by any worthy gemological laboratory. Luckily, these are not used by many clients and are the lowest of the least popular diamonds to use.
