Celebrity engagement rings get a lot of attention and set trends. Some trends might be fleeting, but some set trends that just are not realistic or practical for everyday wear.

Taylor Swift

Let me start with a very popular music artist, Taylor Swift.  This woman is iconic and stylish to the max.  Her ring, however, is not my favourite. I love the yellow gold, and I love the intricate hand engraving.  However, if you are wearing this ring every day, I am not a fan of the claw setting, where the prongs are small for such a large diamond.  For elongated-shaped diamonds, this is a great way for diamonds to come loose.  To keep them snug in their setting, they need a very deep seat, which I feel takes away from the look.  The old antique elongated cushion cut diamond in her ring has large facets and a shallower depth. However, I feel that this does not deliver the same brilliance as other cuts.  Some antique diamonds deliver great sparkle and brilliance that is different from modern diamonds; that is not the case with an old antique elongated cushion cut. Whether or not you like the subtle sparkle of an old antique elongated cushion cut diamond, we can all agree that Taylor makes the whole place shimmer.

Allison Hsu

Take a look at the great diamond that Simu Liu just gave his fiancée, Allison Hsu.  A stunning, large oval diamond set on a very thin band.  This look has been used by many celebrities and has continued a trend of big diamonds with the thinnest of bands.  Great for celebrities and bad for everyday wear.  Thin bands get bent and mangled from seemingly doing nothing.  Too thin a band and you will be visiting your jeweller regularly for repairs.  I try not to go below 1.8mm for my thinnest of bands and highly recommend staying at 2mm or wider.

Lady Gaga

Lady Gaga, another awesome talent, went for a similar look of an oval diamond engagement ring with a thin band.  Many artists and celebrities have gone this direction, and I don’t blame them.  It is a stunning look, but why the thinnest of bands doesn’t make sense unless you are a celebrity and can afford to have your ring taken to a jeweller by your executive assistant regularly.  At least for Lady Gaga, the width was not as thin as that of many celebrities.

Megan Fox

And the gorgeous Megan Fox has a beautiful “Toi et Moi” ring with a pear-shaped diamond and emerald.  While the ring shank is sturdy, for the average wearer, this is a disaster waiting to happen.  The larger emerald and diamond are set with very fine prongs and only three prongs per gemstone.  The emerald is also very exposed.  A light tap or knock, and if a tip moves, out pops a gemstone.  Would you like to wear your rings ‘for good’ or all the time?  This style is very interesting, but it is impractical for everyday wear.  At the very least, add some prongs to add security to the gemstone from being knocked out.

Aryan Sabalenka

The amazing athlete, Aryan Sabalenka, is my favourite tennis player.  She also has great style off the court.  Recently, she was proposed to with a wonderfully sized oval diamond.  Continuing the trend of elongated-shaped diamonds.  Her ring is also a great style with a shank pave set with small diamonds and a hidden halo of emeralds under the large oval center diamond. All of that looks great and will undoubtedly be repeated by brides in jewellers around the country.  And it will be a nightmare for some wearers.  If Aryana plans to wear her ring on the court, or for any other activity, she will be leaving small diamonds from the shank and prongs and broken shards of small emeralds around the tennis court when she picks up her trophies.  And if lucky enough not to have gemstones fall out, over time, the small prongs that hold the diamonds in place will be flattened out and require an expensive repair.  When you earn the kind of money that a world number one tennis player makes, that isn’t a big deal.  When you are a new bride who is bringing up a new family or just purchasing a new home, it is an expense you really don’t want.

Scarlett Johanssen

While not recent, another favourite actress’ ring I don’t like is Scarlett Johanssen’s.  While I think Ms. Johanssen is beyond talented, her ring is beyond lasting for the average person.  The style is unique, but it would be a difficult style to wear daily.  I am not sure how the black band was created.  If it were black rhodium over gold, it would need regular plating.  That aside, the compass setting of a very large pear-like diamond, so exposed, is just waiting to be knocked out of place or chipped.  Also, I would be very surprised if the ring did not spin on her finger. Great look, but difficult to wear every day.

Each of these celebrities excels in their fields, and while the styles they wear are interesting and often copied, my critique is that they are very impractical for someone who is looking for an engagement ring that will stand up to everyday wear.
